Associate Professor Maria Bonn has co-edited a new book on scholarly communication librarianship with Josh Bolick, head of the David Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication and Copyright at the University of Kansas, and Will Cross, director of the Open Knowledge Center at North Carolina State University. Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge was recently published by the Association of College and Research Libraries and is available as an open access edition.

For their new book, the editors have collected theory, practice, and case studies from nearly 80 experts in scholarly communication and open education. iSchool-affiliated authors include Charlotte Roh (MSLIS '14), Brandon Locke (MSLIS '14), Nic Weber (MSLIS '10, PhD '15), Ian Harmon (MSLIS '18), Sarah Hare (MSLIS '15), Brian Quinn (MSLIS '94), and Perry Collins (MSLIS '12).

Scholarly Communication Librarianship and Open Knowledge addresses the economic, social, policy, and legal aspects of scholarly communication—how research is created, evaluated, disseminated, and preserved within the scholarly community. It also delves on topics such as open access, open data, open education, and open science and infrastructure.

"Our hope is that this resource will be adopted in library and information studies courses and lead to increased instruction on the issues and practices contained within it," wrote the editors. "There are a small but growing number of Topics in Scholarly Communication or similarly framed courses for which this book could serve as primary material."

Bonn's research focuses on scholarly communication and open culture and on collaboration in the humanities. At the iSchool, she serves as program director for the MSLIS and CAS programs and teaches courses on academic librarianship, scholarly communication, and publishing. Bonn holds master's and doctoral degrees in American literature from SUNY Buffalo and a master's in information and library science from the University of Michigan.
